PERFORMANCE: Welsh National Squads

U16 Girls

Wales U16 Squad vs IrelandThe U-16 international squads are selected to take part in a one year programme as part of a well-defined talent identification and development pathway. The aim of the U-16's is to develop technically sound athletes who gain an understanding of performance culture and the demands of international hockey. Players who are a year or two younger may be included in the development group according to potential and capability.

The U-16 development squad is selected from the assessment days held in December. Athletes are nominated for assessment in one of 3 methods.

The development squad has 2-day training camps over February half-term and a weekend in March before selection for a Test series at Easter. From this pool, athletes with the greatest potential (as seen at that time) will form the training squad from which teams are selected for a variety of fixtures including a biannual Home Nations tournament (odd years).

The programme has a heavy bias on technical development, particularly core skills, as well as forming an understanding of general fitness requirements. Tactical development is addressed later in the programme.
