Wales v India   0 - 4

There must be a mandate in Welsh Hockey that dictates we give teams a 2-0 lead at half time and then we start playing hockey!

India like their men’s team are technically extremely skillful. Their dribbling skills are superb and their wristy hitting of the ball the envy of most teams.   However this did not scare a fired up Welsh team who took it to them in the 2nd half.   UWIC goalkeeper Sarah Fellows played outstanding and made many heroic saves.   But really it was Swansea sweeper Amanda Roberts who tackled and distributed like a well-oiled machine.

Playing youngsters Kelly Martin and Natalie Hardwicke, both who have hardly played, caused all sorts of problems for the Indian defence.  It was a spectators dream.   End to end hockey with the only difference being India punished any defensive errors and scored some wonderful goals.

The Welsh will have to rely on real spirit and a bit of luck for if India beat Canada today, which should happen - but never rely on other teams doing your dirty work, they will be playing off for 9th – 12th position which will be a fantastic achievement for a small hockey nation.

It may also mean Great Britain selectors will have to look more closely at some Welsh players!

Wales v Canada   3 - 2

A second half hat trick from Sarah Thomas completed an absolute contrast in halves when the Welsh U-21 team beat Canada in Argentina.

Wales were in all sorts of trouble in the first half with Canada taking a 2 - 0 lead early in the match.   Even stand in goalkeeper Margaret Rees hardly had time to find her feet with Canada constantly applying pressure.   Centre back Lindsay Cole and left defender Pippa Jones tried their best but Canada were in complete control.   Wales had the chance to equalise early but despite a desperate dive from Caroline Marsden and the ball trickling over the line the umpire called no goal.

The second half epitomised the game of two halves analogy.   Wales asserted complete dominance with Swansea sweeper Amanda Roberts playing like a demon and confronting the Canadians aggressively whenever they received the ball.  Her interceptions sparked numerous right side attacks and right striker Sarah Thomas and captain Sian Nutting cut the Canadian defence to shreds with incisive runs.   The Welsh game plan in the second half was to put players forward and ensure the Welsh midfield had more room.  Strike forwards Nia Fowler, Carys Hopkins, Caroline Marsden and Sarah Thomas took advantage off the attacking space and forced several penalty corners.   A left lay off to Sarah Thomas sparked the first goal and the Canadian heads sunk.   Further devastating runs from promoted midfielder Abigail Welsford and a quick switch of the ball form Delyth Sharples once again put Sian Nutting in space.   Once in the circle she drew a player and slipped it to Sarah Thomas who, at the time was appealing for a penalty corner, found the ball on the end of her stick.   Making the most of the situation Sarah Thomas faked a shot at goal, dribbled the ball around the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball in the goal.

Wales were on a roll and the Canadians were constantly defending.   All the pressure meant another penalty corner and the ball was switched right and lifted brutally into a Canadian.   The umpire gave another corner and Sarah Thomas completed her routing of the distraught Canadians. With 6 minutes to go, Wales retained their composure and kept the ball on their right hand side until the final whistle went.

All in all it was a great team effort with everybody running extremely hard, but with two days rest they will now play the very skillful Indians who would have to be the unluckiest team here.

Photographs Spain v Wales   2 - 0
We lost 2 - 0 but finally we have a team that believes in themselves.   Spain were 2 up at half time and we were a little tentative but certainly not overawed.   The team is combining well with several players including Pippa Jones and Abigail Welsford covering several positions.

In the second half the team created several goal scoring opportunities with some superb inter-passing between Sian Fowler at right midfield, Sian Nutting at right defender and Sarah Thomas at right striker who moved the ball at pace to front runners Caroline Marsden, Nia Fowler and Carys Hopkins.   This created all sorts of problems for the Spanish defenders who were constantly out flanked.   Unfortunately all shots at goal found the goalkeeper or just missed the goal that was an area of concern.   Being positive was the confidence that oozed from the players as the match progressed.   Youngster Kelly Martin slotted in well into left midfield and made some wonderful through passes for our eager forwards.

While the final result was 2 - 0 the team was devastated which makes a big change from a team that used to hold the Spanish in awe.

Right now we are down to the business end of proceedings and a win against Canada is certainly a reality.

Photographs Argentina v Wales   3 - 0
Tournament favourites Argentina were given a lesson in tactical defence by a resilient Welsh U-21 team.  From the hit off Argentina put pressure on the Welsh team but the Welsh tactics were simple, avoid the midfield and short pass up the flanks and have the strikers keep the ball on their strong side.  This worked until Argentina scored 17 minutes into the match. Argentina became frustrated because defender and vice captain Lindsay Cole (rested because of a groin strain for the first match) tackled firmly and distributed wide.   Argentina scored again just before half time despite goalkeeper Margaret Rees stopping a barrage of shots

Half time 2 - 0.

Coach Caroline Frye reiterated the need to work together in defence and left midfield Abigail  Welsford ensured that Argentina had to work hard to get through the Welsh defensive right (to such an extent she received a temporary suspension in the second half).   Substitute Fran Williams put her body on the line numerous times and father, legendary welsh rugby player JPR Williams, would have been impressed by her commitment.

Argentina scored their 3rd and final goal with 17 minutes to go.  Left striker Nia Fowler and Carys Hopkins at right striker helped immensely by constantly confronting the ball carrier and not getting beaten by the Argentineans excellent ball carrying skills.

All in all a fantastic team effort against an extremely confident Argentinean team who only 6 weeks earlier had lost one nil to Olympic gold medallists Australia (senior team!!).

On Friday they play Spain and at this stage have the opportunity to come third in pool as they have a better points differential than Spain.

Other outstanding players were Pippa Jones at left defender and replacement keeper Sarah Fellows who made some fine saves towards the end of the match.   Amanda Roberts had to be replaced because of a back injury

Photographs Wales v South Africa   0 - 2

Although starting tentatively the Wales U-21 team gained composure and held possession well in the first 6 minutes against a very physical South African team.   Against the run of play South Africa scored after a goalmouth melee.

South Africa built on this and scored again in the 16 minute.   For the rest of the 1st half South Africa dominated and only some grand defensive work from Mags Reece in goal kept the score to 2-0 at half time.

In the second half Wales changed tactics and played a tighter match trying to play down the flanks.    This paid off for South Africa could not attack through the midfield as they had done in the first half.   Wales defenders Fran Williams (centre back) and Amanda Roberts (sweeper) asserted more dominance and restricted shots on the Welsh goal.

Once gaining possession Welsh midfielders Delyth Sharples and Sian Fowler were quick to counter attack and this created two good goal scoring opportunities for Carys Hopkins and Sarah Thomas who tore the South African defence to threads.

While the final score was 0 - 2 Wales came out of the match confident that they would improve as the tournament goes on.    Outstanding in goal was Mags Reece.   Defenders Williams and Roberts supported her well.   Youngsters Natalie Hardwicke and Caroline Marsden also acquitted themselves well.
