Newport  v  Hockeyteam 85 (FIN)  2 - 2
NEWPORT came from behind twice to secure a 2 - 2 draw in their opening game of the European Indoor Championships in Portugal today.
Still recovering from their overnight travel on Thursday and taking time to come to terms with the unusual surface, Newport fell behind to an early goal from Finnish champions Hockey Team 85.
Three minutes before half-time Jamie Westerman leveled the scores from a penalty corner.
Newport started the second half strongly but conceded another goal against the run of play. In the twelfth minute Chris Simm equalised and despite coming close on a number of occasions in the closing minutes, Newport could not force the winning goal.
Team manager Chris Brewer said the unusual surface - a kind of vinyl / plastic instead of the parquet used in Wales - and the tight control being enforced by the umpires had caused a problem in the opening game, despite the team being allowed an hour of practice at the venue last night.
Chris Brewer added that the early glimpses of the other teams gave them cause for optimism over the next five games.
Newport were due to play host team AA Espino at 15.00 today.

Newport  v  AA Espinho  1 - 13
A disastrous first ten minutes cost Newport dear when the hosts of the European Indoor Club Championship in Portugal shot to a 7 - 0 lead.
After some unfortunate time wasting, at the beginning of the match, by Espinho, Newport couldn't settle in to their stride with the tighter, more controlled skills of the Portuguese resulting in a 8 - 1 half time score.  Marc Redfern scoring for Newport.
Newport raised their game in the second half, which was much more evenly matched. Nonetheless, the Portuguese champions confirmed their status as pre-tournament favourites and managed five more goals to leave the final score 13 - 1.

Newport  v  Avoca (IRL)  4 - 5
Newport’s third game in the European Indoor Club Championship ended in narrow defeat 5 - 4 at the hands of the Irish champions Avoca.
After a disappointing first day, Newport raised their game and came from behind three times in the first half.  Tom King, Marc Redfern and Jamie Westerman provided the goals.
In the second half, minor injuries to captain Phil Stacey and King left Newport under strength and allowed Avoca to score twice more.  Rhys Gwilliam pulled one back for Newport, but could not force the equaliser.

Newport  v  HK Lek Lipovci (SLO)  1 - 5
Newport’s performance continued to improve at the European indoor club championships, even if the results do not reflect it.
After picking up a draw and defeat on Friday, and another defeat Saturday morning, Newport began their fourth game positively, but conceded early on. Chris Simm equalised, but from then on HK Lek Lipovci, the Slovenian champions, took over.
Four goals followed despite some fine goalkeeping from Newport’s Nick Suller, leaving the final score 5 - 1 to Lek.

Newport  v  SKPH Senkvice  1 - 5

Newport produced their best performance so far in the European indoor club championships, but still remain without a win.
Slovakian champions, SKPH Senkvice, placed second after the first two days’ play, endured some tricky moments during the first half.  But Newport failed to convert their short corners and found themselves trailing 3 - 0 at half-time.  An early goal from a Jamie Westerman penalty corner and some excellent bustling work from his team-mates resulted in a much closer score line in the second half, but the final result again ended 5 - 1.

The Newport team manager said the tournament had showed up the lack of regular indoor hockey played in Wales.  “The further the tournament has progressed the more apparent it has become that Newport and Avoca of Ireland are the only two teams not playing indoors regularly,” he said.

However, that didn’t prevent the Irish from pulling off the shock of the competition so far, in holding the rampant Portuguese hosts AA Espinho to a draw.  Espinho remain undefeated and favourites to win the seven nation tournament.

Newport close their programme against the Dutch this afternoon (Sunday).
