Girls have final opportunity to stake a claim for a Welsh Trial

The Girls Regional Tournament takes place this Saturday at the Regional Hockey Centre at the North East Wales Institute in Wrexham. Under 16 and Under 18 Teams from South East Wales, South West Wales and North Wales will battle it out to be named Regional Champions 2007/8.

The Chief Executive, Mike Leatt has been quick to point out that "the WHU is looking to work more closely with the Regions and Counties as part of the player pathway in order to strengthen the development of players and also coaches in Wales".

Many of the girls competing have also been selected for the national trials which take place the following weekend (Cardiff for U18’s, Wrexham for U16’s). The list of players invited to the trials, as published on the web site, have been selected by Academy Coaches from the North and South Regional Academies, are existing age-group internationals or have in the case of non Welsh based players, provided a CV, have a strong club and English regional recommendation and have successfully passed scrutiny from a WHU panel. However, the tournament provides the Welsh Hockey Union with another opportunity to see trialists perform in a competitive environment and a final opportunity for players who shine to be added to that list. It will also be an opportunity to see coaches in action.

The tournament also provides Welsh Hockey Union Coaches with a final opportunity to add players to the list for national trials which take place the following weekend (Cardiff for U18’s, Wrexham for U16’s).

National Development Manager (Coaching), Chris Marriott, who will be at the event, recognises the importance of the event and added “We hope that our processes and systems for spotting talent are getting more robust now that the new Regional Academies are in place, but we still need to take every opportunity to make sure that nobody slips through the net. I am sure that I will see some exciting talent on show and I hope to able to speak with all of the coaches about their players this weekend. All of the girls should remember that good performances this weekend could earn them the chance to try out for Wales”.
