GB Women beat Netherlands

A much improved performance by GB Women saw them silence the large home crowd by winning 3-2. Breakthrough for Rhyl High School at Welsh Schoolboys Finals!
The big story at the recent RAF Careers U18 & U16 Schoolboys Finals was definitely Rhyl High School’s triumph at U16 Level. Their 2-0 defeat of Whitchurch High School – the dominant force in schoolboy hockey at the moment – meant they became only the third North Wales School to win this competition.  Normal service resumed in the U18 Final, Whitchurch defeating Eirias School from Colwyn Bay 7-2.  Mike Pennington (Rhyl) and Chris Fido (Whitchurch) were the day’s two outstanding performers.  Special thanks to Chris Despres for co-ordinating the finals once again.

Cardiff/UWIC in EHL Play-offs
Cardiff & UWIC completed a successful tournament and qualified for the English National League next season. Despite losing their final match to Harleston Magpies 1-3, their greater goal difference ensured they finished second to Durham University with both teams promoted. Although Mark Ramage opened the scoring, Harleston equalised within a minute and took the lead with just 10' remaining. A third goal in the last minute was not enough to deny Cardiff & UWIC who now take their place in the National League with the other Welsh side, Whitchurch. In under two weeks time these teams will play each other in the semi-final of the Welsh Cup to see who will take the honours as top club in the Capital.

Cardiff/UWIC in EHL Play-offs
In beating Kingston upon Hull 7-1 Cardiff & UWIC got their campaign back on track and lead the table with 10 points. Two goals from Mark Ramage (pc) and Tim Jones in the opening 3 minutes settled any nerves and with Dolan-Grey also scoring early on, the game and three points were safe. A second from Jones combined with a brace from Che Makan took Cardiff & UWIC 6 goals clear before Kingston pulled one back. Mark Gardiner completed the scoring which now leaves the Welshmen on the verge of National League qualification with one match remaining.

Cardiff/UWIC in EHL Play-offs
Cardiff & UWIC dropped their first points of the campaign when drawing 2-2 with Harborne. Owain Dolan-Grey and Jay Wilyman both scored first half goals to give the Welsh side a comfortable cushion. However Harborne were not to be beaten and Cardiff & UWIC conceded twice to set up a grandstand finish. Despite having chances to clinch victory Cardiff could not find the net and, not for the first time in this tournament, it was goalkeeper Steve Gardiner who ensured a point when stopping a breakaway one on one with 10 seconds remaining. Cardiff & UWIC will be looking to get maximum points against Kingston upon Hull tomorrow who went down by 9 goals earlier today.

GB Superleague

The Celtic Panthers (Men and Women’s teams) both lost their third matches in this year’s GB U-25 Superleague but by winning their respective cross-over games both finished in third place.

Cardiff/UWIC in EHL Play-offs
Cardiff & UWIC recorded their second successive victory in the chase to win National League status in defeating Fareham 2-1. A first half goal from David Saunders following a cross from Tim Jones gave Cardiff the lead which they were never going to lose. Early in the second half and against the run of play, a reversal of their first goal saw Saunders crossing for Jones to tap in. Fareham replied with their own well-worked goal with 7' left and despite having all the play the home side could not force the equaliser. Keeper Steve Gardiner was on top form nullifying a number of Fareham chances. Cardif & UWIC now go into the final three matches next weekend at Cannock sitting at the top of the qualification table.

Olympic Men's draw announced

Vets Tournament a resounding success
The first ever Men and Women's Vets Tournament took place at NEWI, Wrexham on Sat / Sun 19th / 20th April 2008.In total 7 Men's teams took part and 9 Women's, almost 200 Vets in one place at one time!!!!! A total of 32 matches took place and I bet there are a few aching limbs this morning. Saturday was gray and very cold but that did nothing to dispel the atmosphere of enthusiasm and camaraderie. Sunday was gray and wet but the spirits of the players was high, whether that was a hangover from the night before I wouldn't like to say!!! The culmination of the weekend was the two finals. The Men's Final was a North v South clash with Swansea Bay Men finally taking the title after a very exciting and close fought match against Northop Hall. At full time the result stood at 3 - 3 but Swansea Bay managed to edge out Northop Hall on Penalty Strokes. The Women's Final between Howardian and Penarth didn't live up to its billing. Guess Penarth's goalkeeper had sung herself out the night before and had nothing left to give!!!! Howardian retained their title by 6 - 0. I can honestly say that this event was not all about the winning, it was a meeting of "old" hockey friends and making new hockey friends and as such I can say it was a huge success.

Women’s Shield Quarter Finals
In this coming weekend’s matches although being unusually dominated by South Wales based clubs, a number of interesting encounters may result in one or two upsets. Although currently bottom of the South Premier division, Newport knocked out the holders, Colwyn Bay, in the previous round and may well fancy their chances against 1st time entrants Dysynni although, with the latter being a very fast growing club, Dysynni will certainly be no push over. 2006/7 semi-finalists, Wrexham, travel to Premier 2 side Llantrisant & Llantwit and will be hoping to progress to the semi-finals. Previous winners Whitchurch Saints from South Premier 2 take on UWIC from Premier 1 with the latter having comfortably disposed of Gowerton in the previous round. In the final match South Division 1 side UC Swansea host Ruthin (current Plate holders) and will be hoping to send the North Wales based club out of the competition.
