Martyn Gallivan honoured by EHF
Martyn Gallivan, well-known in umpiring and technical circles throughout Europe has been presented with the EHF Diploma of Merit by the EHF President, Leandro Negre at the recent Executive meeting.
Martyn gave up playing at an early age due to injury and took up umpiring and went on to become an FIH Grade 1 umpired at both Outdoor and Indoor and umpired frequently at EHF events.
He first began working for EHF in 1995, when he was invited to “volunteer” as Assistant Secretary, Competitions. In those days, long before the first appointment of a Competitions Manager, all the administrative work in connection with outdoor Nations and Clubs competitions was done by a voluntary Secretary and Assistant Secretary.
Martyn was unlucky, or as they say in English, “thrown in at the deep end” in that within a couple of weeks of him becoming Assistant Secretary (Outdoor), Martin Gotheridge, the then Competitions Secretary, was ill and out of action for 3 months. Martyn was left to run all EHF outdoor competitions single-handed for 3 months. Needless to say he took it in his stride and did the work very efficiently and without complaint.
When his umpiring career came to an end Martyn went on to become a TD for EHF and FIH and continues to take appointments in this field, often combining EHF appointments with seminars in the tournament’s Host country for umpires and/or Technical Officials
Martyn is now in his 13th year with EHF and is currently Secretary of the Nations (Outdoor) Competitions Committee and also a member of the Appointments Committee where his knowledge of Umpires and Technical Officials throughout Europe will prove invaluable.
When he is not involved with hockey Martyn is the Manager of Technical and Engineering Services for the Borough of Portland, based in Weymouth, Dorset.
The President, Leandro Negre, expressed his pleasure at being able to present this award to his friend and colleague, who had over many years, shown his superb voluntary commitment to hockey.
