Wales appoint new Head Coach for
Senior Men’s Squad
The Welsh Hockey Union is delighted to announce that Zak Jones has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Wales Men's Hockey Team. Zak takes over from Mike Williamson who has decided to take a well earned break from international duties after some 20 years continuous, loyal and committed service as a coach and player.
Zak is 34 and attended St. Martins Comprehensive School in Caerphilly, when he played for Llanishen and Llandaff before going on to Loughborough University. He is currently the Director of Hockey at St. Edward’s School Oxford and plays his club hockey for Beeston. He has played for Wales at every age group, won his first senior cap in Belgium in 1992 and has been a regular fixture in the Welsh defence ever since. With his cap tally currently standing at 115, Zak represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and Manchester, captained the national side from 1999-2003 and his consistent contribution to the team was also rewarded with call ups to the Great Britain Development squad on a number of occasions.
Zak has extensive coaching experience in both indoor and outdoor codes: he coached Canterbury to the National Indoor title in 2006 and Beeston to the English Cup title this year. He has also coached at St. Albans, Oxford Hawks and Buckingham Ladies. He will be combining his Senior Men's work with his current role of coach to the Wales Under 21 Men's Team.
WHU CEO, Mike Leatt sees this as bold step for Zak and the WHU to build on the solid foundations that Mike Williamson has laid.
“Zak is well respected across the hockey world and he brings with him clarity, passion and the ability to communicate at all levels. It is a great appointment all round.”
