UK Sport Funding for
Hockey
Continued from 'home' page...
Great Britain
Olympic Hockey Limited, the body charged with delivering Olympic
success for the sport of hockey issued the following press
statement following the funding announcements made by UK Sport
on 11th April 2006.
Roger Self, President of Great
Britain Olympic Hockey Limited
(GBOHL) said:
“We are delighted with the recent announcement made by UK Sport
regarding the first stage of extra funding for the period
2006-2009 for the 27 summer Olympic sports.
GBOHL recognises that the overall
funding package is based on sports earning the right for public
investment through correct governance and improved performances.
Ever since the London 2012 Olympic
Games were announced, the GBOHL Board has been working hard
behind the scenes to secure a new robust Business and
Performance Framework which will meet these two criteria.
A formal Framework Agreement will be
drawn between GBOHL and the three home nation hockey
associations - England Hockey, the Scottish Hockey Union and the
Welsh Hockey Union that will result in improved talent
identification, assessment, selection, and coaching leadership
of our potential British Olympic athletes.
In parallel to the work on the new Framework Agreement, a Great
Britain Performance Plan has been prepared which is in final
draft stage, and this will be submitted to UK Sport within
weeks. This will demonstrate how we will deliver improved
performance on the pitch across the 3 home nations and
ultimately into the Great Britain teams. It will be the
leadership plan for each of the 3 home nations’ performance
plans to ensure Great Britain success. The plan includes new
competition formats to both provide such selection opportunities
and replicate tournament play similar to international events.
There is a unique OG qualification process for a Great Britain
team to participate at an Olympic Games. This process applies to
England, Scotland and Wales and was set by the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIH and agreed with the British
Olympic Association (BOA).
The OG qualification process
requires the nomination of one of the member associations as the
“nominated country” (NC) to achieve qualification to the OG
qualifying tournament.
England Hockey has been nominated by GBOHL to FIH as the Member
Association to achieve qualification for GB Teams to OG 2008.
Further momentum for hockey’s build up in Great Britain is
reflected by England Hockey’s success to secure the EuroHockey
Nations Championships for 2007 for both the men and the women
which will be held at Manchester in August and England teams
will benefit undoubtedly from home crowd support.
The results from these Euro Championships is a route for Great
Britain Teams qualification to the Olympic Games in 2008.
The GBOHL challenge to qualify for the Beijing Olympics and to
meet our performance targets for 2008 will be important key
performance indicators in our UK Sport funding agreement en
route to success also in London in 2012.
GBOHL hope to be able to formally announce the results of all
their recent work sometime in May once all the legal agreements
are approved by the various parties involved and in place.
During this time GBOHL has been working closely with UK Sport
staff, the Member Associations respective Sports Councils to
ensure that what the GBOHL Board are proposing will achieve the
results that they wish to see in return for their commitment to
funding.
GBOHL are due to meet UK Sport to go
through the funding offer in detail and understand its scope. In
principle we understand that the UKS announcement will both
improve the core funding of England Hockey (UK Sport is
England’s elite funding partner also) and at the same time meet
the objectives of the GBOHL Member Associations as set out under
the Framework Agreement and GBOHL Performance Plan to be
finalised shortly.
Until we examine the detail
contained in the funding offer we are
unable to comment further except to say that we are delighted
that UK Sport has been able to secure these extra monies for
hockey and all the other summer Olympic sports.”
