WALES 1 ITALY 4
In their second pool match in the European Nations Trophy in
Azerbaijan, Wales Women faced the unbeaten Italian team.
Yet again they conceded an early goal through a penalty stroke
after just 4 minutes and struggled to make any impression on
their counterparts throughout the whole of the half. Wales
entered the opposition circle on only two occasions and even
when a penalty stroke was awarded to them after good work by
Emma Griffiths, Leah Wilkinson and Louise Bevan the chance was
not taken.
Italy doubled their advantage after 39 minutes when several
crucial defensive tackles were missed and although Wales had a
number of penalty corners awarded to them their unusually poor
execution suggested that the elusive goal could not be found. In
the last 20 minutes of the game Italy went further ahead with an
open play goal (50 mins) and a penalty corner (66 mins) and
despite Georgina Sharples pulling a goal back from another
penalty stroke in the last minute it proved to be too little,
too late.
Manager Andy Ible said “the team performed poorly and showed no
resemblance to the standard that I know they can and have
played. The whole squad are aware that they have let themselves
down and are determined to show their true potential in their
final pool game against Belarus tomorrow (Thursday).”
Wales now need a win against Belarus to ensure they play the
weaker team in the other pool in the first of the relegation
matches.
