WALES 1 BELARUS 2
In their final pool match in the European Nations Trophy in
Azerbaijan, Wales Women faced Belarus in a crucial fixture.
Although Wales started well and seemed to be in control of the
game, for the third successive match they conceded an early goal
when their opponents forced home a penalty corner. Wales started
to build well but the final pass continually let them down. A
Belarus forward was taken out by the Welsh goalkeeper but
fortunately the resultant penalty stroke was put wide. The miss
seemed to spur the Welsh team into action and when they forced
their first penalty corner, Tina Evans narrowly missed the
target. The rest of the half was played in the mid field with
neither side managing to retain possession for any period of
time.
In the 1st minute after the restart Wales forced another penalty
corner but the poor execution which has been a feature of this
campaign again let them down. Belarus immediately
counter-attacked with the Welsh defence only just managing to
scramble the ball away from their own goal line with the
opposition forwards bearing down on them. A determined run by
Nia Fowler carried the ball well into the Belarus circle and
following a slip pass to Louise Bevan her strong shot into the
roof of the net brought her team level. Belarus did not take
long to regain the lead when a straight shot from a penalty
corner found the backboard. The Belarusian’s were determined
that Wales should not come back into the game again and some
stout defence left them running down the clock to leave them
winners 2-1.
Manager Andy Ible said “it is vital that we win the next game
(against Lithuania on Saturday) to ensure we remain in the
Trophy division. The squad are aware of what is required and are
currently training hard on what is their rest day”.
