WALES LOSE TO CZECHS IN
SEMI-FINAL
After Ireland booked their place in the 2007
European Championship Wales looked to do the same in their game
against the Czechs. They started strongly gaining three short
corners in as many minutes but could not capitalise.
Progressively the Czechs got into the game and after twenty
minutes gained the lead which they held until half time, with
the Czechs being given their first yellow card with only a
minute remaining on the clock.
Wales pushed hard at the restart and after five
minutes got a short corner. An Ollie Cooper shot was parried by
the keeper but Andy Cornick was there to put it in the back of
the net. However the Czechs were determined and after gaining
two more yellow cards for breaking down play finally gained a
short corner which they converted. Just three minutes later and
yet another yellow was given to the Czechs and what followed was
a hotly disputed goal. A shot at goal by Lahoda Lukas looked to
rebound off the post. The umpire immediately gave the goal and
despite numerous remonstrations did not feel the need to consult
the other umpire and the goal stood.
This changed the complexion of the game and a
second yellow for Simon Organ in the game resulted in a red with
six minutes remaining. 3 – 1 was the final score and Wales must
feel really aggrieved as with just one yellow card being given
to Wales before Simon Organs red, against four for the Czech for
continually breaking play down combined with the disputed goal
shows how cruel international hockey can be.
Tomorrow however they can further enhance their
European ranking if they can overcome Austria and bring home a
Bronze medal.
