Whitchurch HC – Welsh Cup

The Welsh Hockey Union has confirmed that
Whitchurch HC have not been allowed to enter either the Indoor
or Outdoor Welsh Cups for this current season (2005/6).
At a recent meeting, the Board were made aware
that the club had decided to forego their option to represent
Wales in the European Cup Winners Cup following their victory in
last year’s competition. The Board also noted that the club had
made a similar decision earlier in the year in respect of the
European Indoor Cup.
Whilst the Board appreciated the reasons behind
the clubs decision, it is unfortunate that when the discussion
was held with regard to the Indoor Cup, some consideration was
not given to the possibility of a similar situation arising in
either the Outdoor Cup or Premiership competition.
The Board considered that to win the Welsh Cup,
one of Welsh Hockey Union’s premier competitions, and then to
decline to participate in the European competition was a very
serious matter, particularly as the club had obviously
considered the implications of an European campaign some months
earlier. The Board also considered the position with regard to
Whitchurch’s replacements in both competitions, Swansea Bay HC,
for if they had not been able to take up the places it is quite
feasible that the Welsh Hockey Union’s position in future
European competitions could have been adversely affected.
It was therefore decided, albeit reluctantly,
that Whitchurch HC will not be permitted to enter either the
Welsh Indoor or Outdoor Cups for the 2005/6 season. The club
will however be at liberty to enter the competition to determine
the Welsh club Champions.
