BOYS DRAW WITH RUSSIA – U-18 GIRLS LOSE TO SAME COUNTRY
In their penultimate match in their European Tournament in Czech
Republic, Wales faced the unbeaten Russian team.
In a very even first period, the Welsh game plan worked
extremely well as Russia were restricted to just 2 penalty
corners, both of which were comfortably dealt with. Wales
created their own chances but could not force the ball home
until Danny Berry finished off a fine ‘team’ goal to give Wales
the lead in the 20th minute.
Wales started strongly in the second half but with both defences
on top chances were few and far between. Playing in temperatures
of mid 30 degrees, heat fatigue began to set in and Russia
eventually forced the equaliser in the 61st minute from open
play.
Coach Ian Ord said “I was extremely proud of the boys’
performance today which shows the substantial development that
has been made since the last European tournament 2 years ago”.
Wales are still very much in contention for promotion with
everything still to be decided in the final matches tomorrow
(Saturday) when they take on Switzerland with France also
playing Russia.
The Girls did not have such a successful day in their tournament
in Lithuania when they lost their match against Russia 2-3.
Despite coming from behind twice through goals from Emma Batten
Wales face a crucial last match against France tomorrow
(Saturday) if they are to retain their Trophy division place.
