WALES U18 BOYS ACHIEVE
BRONZE MEDAL
In their final match of the tournament, Wales faced Switzerland
in an attempt to gain promotion. Despite taking an early lead
through a Mark Sullivan penalty corner, Wales were pegged back
when Switzerland equalised through a penalty corner strike after
20 minutes to leave the
scores level at half time.
Wales took the game to their opposition at the start of the
second half, but were pegged back when Switzerland scored with a
penalty corner, against the run of play. After Dan Berry had
equalised again for Wales at another penalty corner, Switzerland
quickly regained the lead. With 6 minutes to go, Robin Cooper
pulled Wales level from a drag flick at another penalty corner.
The final minutes were frantic, with Wales looking for the vital
winning goal. Despite going close, they could not score the
winner.
This result leaves Wales in 3rd place, just missing out on
promotion.
Coach Ian Ord said "the 3-3 draw was very disappointing; however
the bronze medal was well deserved and is some reward for the
improvements shown over the last 2 years. The boys were a credit
to their country and shows we are developing well. I must also
give credit to the coaching and management team who have all
worked extremely hard in supporting the squad"
