Valleys Hockey Event on BBC2 Sport Wales with Jason Mohammad (20th March 2008)

Yesterday’s visit of Olympic gold medallist Sean Kerly to Rhondda Cynon Taff certainly attracted a lot of interest, including the BCC Sport Wales presenter – Jason Mohammad.

Sean made a very special visit to Rhondda Cynon Taff to promote and inspire hockey in the Valleys - a visit coordinated by Judith Powell (Hockey Development Officer) with tremendous and essential support from Southwood Properties.

The former GB striker, who won an Olympic Gold medal at the 1988 games in Seoul, gave up his time to spend with the Sports Development team getting involved in a full day of events.

The Hockey Day ‘bullied off’ at 8.30am with a visit to Brynna Primary school where over 20 children regularly take part in a Hockey Breakfast club before the school day even kicks off!

Next Dragon Sport took the reins and organised a superb festival with over 100 primary school pupils all having a go at hockey skills, fun games and small sided hockey matches, all led by recently qualified young coaches who are part of RCT’s ‘Coaches for the Future’ programme, mentored by the Hockey Development officer and Dragon Sport. Sean showed that he still has it with some superb technical skills at the end to the pupils' and teachers' amazement.

Welsh Hockey Union staff and talented secondary school girls and boys from across the county borough attended an afternoon event at Hawthorn where they were coached by some of the top performance coaches in Welsh Hockey preceded by the official opening of the NOF Funded ATP by the Olympic legend.

The day rounded off with ‘An Audience with Sean Kerly’ type of evening at Rhondda Heritage Park Hotel, where guests listened to inspiration stories form his Olympic days.

The whole day was a hugely prolific event for sport in the area, Caroline Medlicott Sports Development manager for the County Borough said: "What Sean Kerly has brought with him and left in Rhondda Cynon Taff was so much passion, energy and enthusiasm for hockey and Sport he has really left a legacy of captivated and enthused pupils, teachers, coaches and clubs of which we couldn’t thank him enough."
