WHU statement regarding the use of protective mouth guards, shin guards and face masks
The FIH Rules of Hockey (Rule 4) clearly state that field players are recommended to wear mouth, shin and ankle protection. The WHU, whilst unable to make the wearing of such protection mandatory for their personal safety, strongly advises all players (and especially young players) to do so not only when playing in matches, but also whilst training, warming up, and in any other situations where injury from hockey balls, sticks or other players remains a risk. In addition, the WHU recommends that adult players defending the goal line at penalty corners wear protective face masks in accordance with The FIH Rules of Hockey. A fact sheet on Mouth Guards is available for download from the coaching resources page. A wide range of hockey specific shin and ankle protection as well as face masks is available through Gilmour Sports, the WHU’s corporate sponsor and preferred supplier of hockey equipment.
