Welsh Hockey Union Limited AGM
The WHU held a successful AGM, linking up the 2 venues of WIS and Plas Menai on Sunday 16th March 2008. The date was reset from 6 January which became an EGM to move forward the board modernisation. A total of 40 people attended and with so many hockey activities underway – a coaching course, youth competitions, u21 and u18 national training for girls and national league fixtures, there were also 23 apologies for absence! After a technical hitch with the video conference, the essential business was conducted efficiently. Four directors appointed to the new, streamlined board structure were Karen Evans and John Turton for up to 30 months and Mary Bainbridge and Jen Barton for 18 months. Thanks were also passed to those standing down from the board; Ian Ord, Sarah Powell, Colin Crayford and Chloe Guy, all of whom plan to remain active in the wider hockey family. The published process of appointing up to 3 non-executive directors will now proceed in earnest in time for the first board meeting at which the chair will also be appointed.
The meeting reviewed the financial standing of the WHU thoroughly and noted the change in emphasis to development. Itr was also agreed to raise subscriptions in line with inflation. There was some healthy debate on the strength of hockey and cultural changes that had an impact on the sport over 10 years. The need to do things differently, work together and support volunteers were all key themes. There was strong representation from the Development Officers and recognition of their changing and increasingly pivotal role in promoting hockey in the community.
There was also an upbeat message on using GB participation the Olympics both in 2008 and 2012 as a golden opportunity to promote hockey and help attract further investment.
