EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy (Women)
Hermes v Howardian 3-1
A young and inexperienced Howardian side faced
Irish Cup Winners Hermes of Dublin in their 1st
pool match. Vastly experienced in Euro competitions,
Hermes were held at bay by some superior tactics
and determined defending. Howardian created some
chances on the counter attack. It took 25minutes
in the energy sapping heat for the Irish team to
open the scoring from open play. A second goal followed
with an unstoppable penalty corner strike by recently
retired Irish international Jenny Burke.
Howardian took the game to the opposition after
the break but conceded a scrappy goal midway through
the 2nd half. The defence and midfield’s contribution
was outstanding.
Howardian continued to press as Hermes tired
and the pressure eventually told when Captain Emma
Winch scored with a fine strike from a penalty corner.
The final score was 3-1 to the tournament favourites,
Hermes but this was a very encouraging performance
from the Welsh representatives.
This is Howardian’s first time representing Wales
in outdoor competition. Wales also are represented
by Jane Price (Bridgend) who is a judge and Kate
Oultram (Mold) who is an FIH umpire.
