EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy (Women)
Lille MHC (FRA) v Howardian 6-1
Lille MHC, French
representatives on many occasions played
Howardian in the second pool game. Howardian
started brightly and built on a good performance
yesterday by adopting an attacking approach to
the game. They created some good chances early
on but were unable to convert the pressure into
a goal.
They then suffered a
set back by conceding a goal from Lilles first
penalty corner, a well taken strike. Undaunted
Howardian matched the French for work rate and
scored a deserved equaliser with a reverse stick
strike from captain Emma Winch.
The remainder of the
first half was played at a frenetic pace with
the French fortunate to keep 11 players on the
pitch as the umpires took a lenient view of
French physical play. Half time score 1-1.
Howardian were
awarded the first PC of the second half but were
unable to achieve the lead they deserved. It
wasn’t until the 50 th minute that Lille took
the lead themselves on the counter much against
the run of play. As the game wore on Lille
exerted more pressure and scored a third with
contentiously awarded PC.
This unsettled the
tiring Howardian team and the French scored
three further goals within 15 minutes to a
finish with a 6-1 scoreline.
In spite of the
disappointment of the last quarter, Howardian
can take many positives for the way they matched
an experienced French side for much of the game.
