EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy (Women)
Howardian v Mori Villafranca (ITA) 10-0
On day three of the
tournament Howardian faced their toughest
challenge, facing hosts obvious favourites and
on form Villafranca.
Against a team
containing two Belarussians, one Ukranian, one
Argentinian and three Italian internationals,
Howardian battled well but were outclassed in
all areas.
A disappointing
decision by the umpire awarding a PC within
minutes of the game meant that the girls from
Cardiff were on the back foot from the offset.
The onslaught continued and despite constant
pressure Howardian played some good hockey.
However the outstanding skills and clinical
finishing of the Italians were too much for the
cerise and blacks.
It was five nil at
half time and could have been more but for some
superb goalkeeping by Emma Olivari and brave
defending by the Howardian back four.
Having already played two of the top teams in
the tournament, including the physical French
team, the tiring and bruised Howardian team
could not cope with the superior play of the
home team.
The Howardian cause was not helped by the
hospitalisation of two players and also a yellow
card resulting from a clumsy exhausted
challenge. Villafranca went on to score a
further five excellent goals in the second half
demonstrating their first class technique,
flare, fitness and skill.
This was certainly a lesson in international
hockey.
