EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy (Women)
Olten (SUI) v Howardian 1-1, 3-1 after
penalty shoot-out competition
After finishing bottom in the strongest Pool
Howardian played Swiss champions HC Olten (who
finished third in their pool)in the cross over
game on the final day.
In good spirits and despite having two players
unavailable through injury, Howardian had much
the better of the first half, but were unable to
covert scoring opportunities into goals.
Conversely HC Olten took their one chance and
scored in the twentieth minute. The second half
continued much the same with the Swiss team
constantly under the cosh. A great break from
midfield caught out the increasingly desperate
Olten defence and allowed a combined effort by
Nat Lineham, Sam James Becky Fleck and Captain
Emma Winch to equalise the score to one all.
A tense period of play ensued with many near
misses for Howardian resulting in a final score
was 1-1. Unfortunately there was no extra time
as Howardian as undoubtedly had the upper hand
and fitness against the flagging Swiss.
Howardian were eventually beaten by three
well-taken penalty strokes. The Olten goalkeeper
made three excellent saves to deny the Welsh
side.
Despite losing all games, Howardian have
experienced mixed feelings throughout the
tournament. However it has been commented by the
technical desk that the Club has conducted
themselves in a professional manner at all
times. Howardian have been proud to represent
Wales in such a prestigious and enjoyable
competition and have enjoyed the experience of
European hockey. Especially learning a few words
of Russian, Italian and German!
Our thanks go to the tournament officials and
Italian hosts.
