Early on,
Cardiff's Eurohockey Club Champions Challenge campaign was defined by injuries. Defender Nick Howard
was declared unfit to play and Chris Shaw seems destined to follow. Then in
training captain and goalkeeper Steve Gardiner sustained an injury to his
right hand, but was still able to play.
Cardiff's
opening game was against perceived group underdogs Epitok of Hungary. A
bright Cardiff stated well and effectively finished the tie in the first
fifteen minutes, scoring four early goals. Even though Cardiff lead by 7-0
at half time, they didn't slack off and made the final score 12-0. A
representative of group rivals Italy was suitably impressed. Che Makan,
Brendan Noble, Stuart Blake and Ian Davies all scored two each, while Troy
Hari, Tim Jones, James Campbell and Mark Gardiner added one apiece.
In the other group game Lamas of Portugal and Lazio of Italy drew 2-2,
amidst controversial and hilarious closing scenes which saw the Portugal
goalkeeper save a last minute penalty flick and then get sent off for his
celebrations. Neither side looked beyond beating.
