Men's EuroHockey Indoor Club
Champions Challenge 2006
Continued from 'home' page...
Gothenburg,
Sweden, 17/19 February.
Final Ranking
1. Royal White Star (BEL)
2. Partille (SWE)
3. Railway Union (IRL)
4. Swansea Bay (WAL)
5. Hockey Team 85 (FIN)
Swansea started well in their game against Railway Union of
Ireland, but were facing a well-drilled side coached by the
Irish national coach. The Union took the lead and were 2-1 up
half time with the Swansea goal being scored by Richard Jones.
With goalkeeper William Barletta in outstanding form, Railway
Union could not increase their lead and with three minutes to go
Chris Nelson earned Swansea a well-earned 2-2 draw.
Leading 3-1 at half-time in their second game against the Fins
through goals from Clive Hardy, Matt Boyd and Chris Nelson
Swansea
seemed to be in control however the opposition took command in
the
second half and despite Richard Jones scoring again, the 4-4
draw was a case of points dropped by Swansea.
With their third game being against the Belgian joint
favourites, Royal White Star, Swansea could not raise their game
following the earlier disappointment and ran out losers 1-3.
The disappointment continued when Swansea lost their next match
0-6 against Partille the other joint-favourites from Sweden .
Despite their two losses Swansea were still in contention for
the bronze medal in their final match against Railway Union. A
poor start resulted in the Irish scoring three times and,
despite coming back into the game in the second half, Swansea
could not convert a number of chances with the half-time score
continuing to the end.
Swansea played well all tournament but if they had taken their
chances it could have been so different! The one small
consolation was that Swansea won the Fair Play cup!
