Continued from 'home' page...
Premier Team -
English Hockey League
25th February 2006 v Exmouth (A) 1 - 4 WIN
Swansea were
determined to maintain their top slot and opened positively
pressurising the home side with a slick passing game. In the
14th min Beth Fisher scored from a sizzling direct corner
strike. Swansea continued to play fast open hockey and in the
22nd minute Nia Fowler carried the ball in a dazzling run from
the half way line to the circle edge where she slipped the ball
to Beth who shot the ball goalwards - the GK saved the initial
shot but Carys Hopkin was on hand to snap up the rebound.
Exmouth tried to
respond and find some pattern of play but the Swansea midifleld
and defence was not in a generous mood. The home side was
awarded a Penalty Stroke in the 24th minute when Ria Male
tackled in a one on one situation and was deemed to stick tackle
the attacker - Ria was not to be beaten and made an excellent
diving save. Clare Halliday bagged Swansea’s third goal shortly
before half time as she poached a goal off the GK pads at a PC.
Within 5 mins of
the re-start Swansea had extended their lead when Robyn Wilford
launched a fierce strike from the circle edge to beat the
Exmouth GK. There was great excitement as this was Robyn’s first
goal for the Club.
The home side
continued to fight back and started to create some good
attacking moves but the defence lead by Ria stood firm. Exmouth
was also thwarted by the woodwork and on two occasions the ball
struck the posts. The home side was awarded 4 PCs in the last 5
minutes and with the final whistle blown and the last play of
the game Jackie Shuter converted the PC strike to earn a well
deserved goal.
Swansea achieved
their goal for the day - the top slot is still theirs..
