Swansea lose top spot

Premier Team -
English Hockey League
4 March 2006 v Firebrands (H) 1 - 2 LOSS
Firebrands arrived
in confident mood after securing an 8-0 victory in their last
game - they have shown that when a goal scoring opportunity is
presented it’s usually taken.
Swansea started strongly and took the game to the visitors but
they failed to convert the chances created. Having withstood the
early pressure from Swansea the Bristol team started to venture
forward themselves and at their first PC in the 17th minute the
first well struck shot hit the post and rebounded back to the
stick of Becky Millard who calmly slotted home the opening goal.
The pattern continued, much Swansea pressure that fizzled out in
the crucial areas and a team that was always dangerous on the
break and more clinical in the vital areas. At their 2nd PC on
33 minuntess Georgie Field made the strike that was deflected by
the out-coming defender high into the net.
In the second half Swansea put all they had into trying to
recover the game but it seemed the harder they tried the less
likely they were to score. In the 65min a hard hit cross into
the circle was deflected by Gwen Thomas into the goal - with a
glimmer of taking something from the game Swansea pressed
forward again and again but the Firebrands defence stood strong
and the score remained at 1 - 2.
Swansea have lost their top position to Horsham by virtue of
goal difference - the outcome of this division is still in the
balance.
