Swansea disappointment at EHL
3rd place
Continued from 'home' page...
Premier Team -
English Hockey League
1st April - v St Austell (H) 1 - 2 LOSS
Swansea started the game brightly
and attacked from the start forcing 2 early corners but with no
reward. In the 10th minute St Austell forced a PC from their
first real foray forward and the direct strike by Helen Stubbs
was deflected by a defender’s stick to soar high into the net
giving the GK little chance to save. Swansea continued to force
the game and built attack after attack but the St Austell well
organised defence frustrated their efforts. With much emphasis
on attack the home side was always susceptible to a quick break
- and in the 30th minute that’s what happened - St Austell
launched a quick attack down the right and Linda Webb cooly
finished the move. 0 - 2 at half time.
Swansea still had everything to play
for and once again they pushed all into attack - but it was one
of those frustrating days when the ball just wouldn’t run their
way. Robyn Wilford hit the post in the 45min and several other
attacks petered out with shots wide of the target or well saved
by the on-form St Austell GK In the 69th minute Carys Hopkins
scored from open play but the game was lost.
Horsham clearly won their match to
top the table and win promotion. Firebrands secured a draw to
end up with equal points with Swansea BUT their better goal
difference meant that they leap-frogged Swansea into the
play-off position. Swansea was placed 3rd in the league and
after such a promising season this was a very disappointing end.
When the disappointment eases they
will be able to appreciate the immense progress made by the team
in such a short time and will look forward with eagerness to
next season!
