Whitchurch
maintained their 100% home record in the EHL National South with
a convincing 5-2 win against bottom club Cambridge University.
Alex Keating gave Whitchurch a great start, shooting home after
just 3 minutes, but the students’ defence was generally well
organised and the Welshmen struggled to make clear openings
despite enjoying most of the possession. Jez Hansell equalised
for Cambridge from a penalty corner after 24 minutes but Laith
El Khatib restored Whitchurch’s advantage just before the break.
Two goals in two minutes midway in the second period pulled
Whitchurch clear, defender Owen Brotherton firing in a superb
reverse stick shot and El Khatib rifling home a penalty corner.
Sam Grimshaw pulled a goal back for Cambridge after 60 minutes,
but El Khatib had the last word, completing his hat trick on the
stroke of time to round off a good win for Whitchurch, keeping
them in third place in the table. Whitchurch face a tricky
encounter this Sunday, away to mid table Plymouth Marjon in the
next round of EHL matches.
