Whitchurch: Still
all to play for in
final matches

EHL National
South
25th march 2006, Whitchurch v Havant ( H ) 1 - 8 LOSS
After a dramatic
weekend of hockey it's all to play for in the last round of the
EHL National South next weekend as Whitchurch, Oxted and Indian
Gymkhana fight it out for the promotion play-off spot behind
runaway champions Havant. Whitchurch were crushed 8-1 at home by
the star-studded Havant team on Saturday and the result could
have been a lot worse had it not been for a great performance in
goal from Iwan Williams and determined defending by Owen
Brotherton and Neil Potter. Whitchurch too created a number of
good chances, with James Bainbridge and Laith El Khatib taking
the attack to Havant, and Khatib's late consolation goal was no
more than Whitchurch deserved. Inspirational midfielder Jon
Collis was injured after a few minutes on Saturday and was
missing from Sunday's tricky away encounter at Oxford Hawks.
However, the whole Whitchurch team responded brilliantly after
the previous day's defeat and ran out 9-4 winners with El Khatib
scoring a hat-trick, James Bainbridge and Owen Brotherton two
apiece and Jon Naughalty and Adam Palmer picking up a goal each.
Fourth-placed Whitchurch play third-placed Oxted at home this
Saturday in a crucial clash (2.00 start at the Welsh Institute
of Sport). Both have 32 points, two behind Indian Gymkhana who
play unbeaten Havant at home. If Whitchurch beat Oxted they will
earn the promotion play-off spot provided that Havant beat
Indian Gymkhana or, if Gymkhana draw, a one goal win for
Whitchurch against Oxted should be enough because whilst both
teams will then have the same points and goal difference
Whitchurch have a much better goals for column.
