Whitchurch moved
into third place in the EHL National South with a hard-fought
3-1 home win against Indian Gymkhana on January 28th. After a
slow start Whitchurch took command of the first period, with
James Bainbridge in scintillating form up front and Adam Palmer
and Jon Collis showing neat touches in midfield. Laith El Khatib
coolly finished off a four-man move to put his team one up after
16 minutes and one minute later Tom Fisher collected a great
through ball from skipper Jon Willicombe to smash home the
second. Indian Gymkhana looked demoralised when Alex Keating
neatly deflected home a pass from Collis with five minutes
remaining to half-time and had their goalkeeper to thank for
some fine saves at penalty corners as Whitchurch pressed for a
fourth before the interval. Defenders Mark Hopkins and Kam-Yin
Boey were in great form for Whitchurch in the second period as
their defence came under pressure from some determined and
skilful Gymkhana attacks. Ed Jones made some great saves in goal
and Gymkhana’s only reward was a consolation goal from Laveen
Jandu midway through the half. With the National Indoor
Championships booked for this weekend Whitchurch’s next EHL
match is against bottom club Cambridge University at home on
February 11th.
