EHL National
South
18th Whitchurch v Ipswitch ( H ) 2 - 2 DRAW
Whitchurch could
only draw 2-2 with visitors Ipswich on 18 March but with second
placed Oxted losing again and Indian Gymkhana winning well the
race for the EHL National South promotion play-off spot behind
champions Havant is hotting up. Although hitting a post early on
Whitchurch struggled to cope with the fast breaking Ipswich
forwards during the first half, conceding two goals with some
indifferent defending. In an exciting second period a penalty
corner from Jon Collis in the 60th minute and a neat deflection
from James Bainbridge two minutes later pulled Whitchurch back
into the match and the final period of the game was almost all
Whitchurch, though defender Owen Brotherton was called on to
make a crucial interception when Ipswich forced an overload and
a goal looked likely. There was agony for Whitchurch in the last
minute as a superbly struck penalty corner from Jon Collis hit
the post with the defenders beaten. Oxted’s surprise defeat at
Barford Tigers has opened up the promotion play-off spot, with
the current position:
Oxted
31 points, 2 games to play, Univ Birmingham (h), Whitchurch
(a)
Indian Gymkhana
31 points, 2 to play, Ipswich (a), Havant (h)
Whitchurch
29 points, 3 to play, Havant (h), Oxford Hawks (a), Oxted
(h)
(3 points for a
win, 1 a draw)
Whitchurch play their re-arranged match with Havant this
Saturday, 1.30 start at Whitchurch High School, and travel to
Oxford Hawks the next day.
