EHL National
South
1st April 2006, Whitchurch v Oxted (H) 5 - 1 LOSS
Whitchurch's
league season ended in disappointment as they crashed 5-1 at
home to Oxted and thus failed to secure the promotion play-off
spot in the EHL National South. Whitchurch were never really in
the hunt against a full strength Oxted and were on the back foot
for much of the first half against some slick attacking play by
the visitors. Whitchurch keeper Iwan Williams was again in fine
form and despite their pressure Oxted turned around just one
goal up. Whitchurch needed a win to secure second place and
attacked strongly at the start of the second period but the
wheels came off in dramatic fashion as the Oxted forwards ran
riot to score four goals in eight minutes with twenty minutes
still remaining. Laith El Khatib had opened Whitchurch's account
during this scoring burst and the Welshmen forced several short
corners in the last quarter but the Oxted defence stood firm.
Whitchurch finished a creditable 4th in the division with Oxted
clinching the runners-up spot as a result of Indian Gymkhana
losing to undefeated champions Havant.
