Swansea concede 9 in first Euro match
Swansea opened their 2006 Eurohockey Club
Champions Challenge venture against the number
one seeds, Volga Telecom, from Russia who were
strong, athletic and generally quicker to the
ball.
Swansea were still trying to adapt to the
fast tempo of the game when they conceded a goal
in the 5th minute. Swansea started to play their
way into the game and had a few attacks in the
Russian circle when in the 24th minute a
breakaway out of defence saw Volga Telecom score
their second goal. Swansea conceded their 3rd
goal when a stick tackle in the circle resulted
in a penalty stroke. Seconds before the interval
Swansea conceded a fourth goal.
Swansea came out in the second half
determined to play their own game and managed to
keep possession and create a few openings in the
Russian defence. The Telecom side were always
quick to break and capitalise on any
opportunity. This was evident when in the 46th
minute their 5th goal was scored closely
followed 12 minutes later by their 6th. One
would have expected Swansea heads to drop but
the reverse happened. It was at this point that
Swansea played some of their best hockey of the
game. Two chances were created when a reverse
sweep by Beth Fisher and a strike by Sarah
Sloane brought out the best of the Russian
goalkeeper. In the 54th minute a penalty corner
was flicked over the prostrate keeper and Volga
Telecom were 7 goals up. In the last 3 minutes
of the game Volga scored 2 more goals.
At first sight this may seem to be a poor
Swansea performance but this young side kept to
the task and despite the scoreline they
acquitted themselves well with Ella Rafferty
having an outstanding game.

Swansea bounce back with a win
In their second match Swansea played the host
club Slavia Praha. The Czech side started
strongly and forced 2 corners in the first 10
mins but Swansea coped comfortably. After the
first quarter hour Swansea settled and started
to play themselves into the game. At their 2nd
PC in the 19th minute Gemma Petty scored from a
strong direct strike. The game them became an
even affair with both teams sharing possession.
In the 30th minute Nia Fowler created a great
opening for herself and her reverse stick sweep
brought a fine save from the Czech GK.
In the 10min of the 2nd Half a Czech
indiscretion was penalised with a yellow card
and from the re-start a great long ball found
Carys Hopkins who carried the ball from the
half-way line into the circle where she cleverly
committed the GK before scoring a great solo
goal.
With the vocal home support behind them, Slavia
pressed forward and in the 55th minute they were
rewarded with a PC - Ria Male made the initial
save but the rebound was swiftly pounced on and
the score was 2 - 1.
The final quarter hour was a tense affair with
Slavia pressing hard but Swansea held fast to
secure their first win of the tournament and
provide an exciting setting for the final pool
game against the Lithuanian champion club -
Siauliai Gintra.
