Bratislava, Slovakia
DAY 1: Penarth LHC remain undefeated...
In their Eurohockey Indoor Club Championship event in
Bratislava, Penarth defeated ABC (Fin) and drew with Triglav (SLO)
on the first day.
Against ABC, despite falling behind to a 12th minute goal and
having a penalty stroke saved, Penarth came good with a
converted penalty stroke from Captain, Sian Baldwin, quickly
followed by an opportunist goal by Maree Thomas. Sian Baldwin
scored her second early after the break and despite ABC
coverting their own flick Penarth ran out winners 3-2.
In their 2nd game against the Slovenians, Penarth raised their
game in this crucial match as the opposition had already lost
their own first game against the hosts and pool favourites, Raca.
Against the run of play and following a defensive error, Triglav
opened the scoring but Penarth soon recovered to equalise
through Bridget Radice. With goalkeeper Angela Ninian standing
firm the game was far quicker than their first match and with
Sian Baldwin scoring her third of the day, Penarth looked good
for all three points. However Triglav were awarded and converted
what seemed a harsh penalty stroke and
although Penarth came close on a number of occasions could not
force the winning goal. Final score 2-2.
Penath go into their final pool match tomorrow (Saturday)
knowing that the opportunity is there to qualify for the
promotion pool.
In the other group the two favourites from Cascais (Por) and
BASK (SCG) both found the Ukrainians too hot too handle losing
3-8 and 0-18 respectively.
DAY 2: Penarth progress to promotion pool...
In their final pool game, Penarth knew that a point would see
them through to the promotion pool. However against the hosts -
Raca - it was never going to be an easy task as Raca had yet to
drop a point. Penarth started in tremendous style and despite
not converting a penalty stroke, took the lead after four
minutes through Maree Thomas. Raca were certainly put out by
Penarth's style and took time to come to terms with in what was,
without doubt, their hardest
match so far. Raca equalised and took the lead with 2 quick
goals but Penarth fought back to equalise through Pip Laugharne,
leaving the half time score at 2 - 2. the second half proved to
be one of the most entertaining of the tournament with both
teams coming close to increasing their score. It was Penath who
broke the deadlock with Pip Laugharne scoring again in the 38th
minute. Raca immediately replaced their goalkeeper with a
kicking back and again equalised one minute later. With their
goalkeeper once again on the pitch Raca threw everything at
Penarth and despite determined efforts it was Raca who scored
the winning goal with 10 seconds of the match left.
Penarth's fortunes were now in the hands of ABC (FIN) who needed
to restrict Triglav (SLO) to no more than 7 clear goals - a hard
task given their earlier results. Despite leading 5 - 0 at half
time Tríglav conceded two goals leaving them with a mountain to
climb. with the final score standing at 5 - 2 Penarth were
through to the promotion pool.
In their first match against Dinamo (UKR), Penarth, like all
other teams, found the Ukrainians too hot too handle and despite
keeping them at bay for the first 5 minutes, 4 goals in as many
minutes from the goal scoring machine left Penarth staring down
the wrong end of an overwhelming defeat. However determined play
by the whole team left the halftime score at 0 - 5. A further
four goals early in the second half left Penarth facing an
uphill struggle and despite coach Sian Trotman coming on as
kicking back to enable goalkeeper Angela Ninian to take a well
earned break, she could not prevent Dinamo running out winners
by 12 - 0.
In their final match tomorrow (Sunday) against Slagelse DEN´,
due to the other results in the pool, Penarth will be playing
for the bronze medal.
Day 3: Penarth finish 4th in Euro Indoor
In their final match of the tournament Penarth knew that
only a win against Slagelse DEN would gain them third place and
a deserved bronze medal. After an even first 15 minutes, Penarth
took the lead through a well worked penalty corner from Maree
Thomas. This seemed to sting Slagelse into action and they
replied with two quick goals of their own to take 2 -1 lead at
half time.
Neither team
seemed able to take control of the match for any length of time
until the 30th minute when Izzy Reid forced home the equaliser.
Almost immediately Slagelse regained the lead and in an attempt
to get back into the game Penarth replaced goalkeeper Angela
Ninian with Leigh Harries at kicking back. It was not to be
Penarths day as the Danes scoed their 4th and final goal in
the last minute to take third place.
Penarth can
certainly be very pleased with their determined efforts and
coach Sian Trotman is already making plans for next years Euro
indoor for which the team has already qualified.
In the final match
of the tournament Dinamo-Sumchanka Summy(UKR) continued their
winning spree by beating the hosts KPH Raca(SVK) by 11-0. Both
teams however now gain promotion.
