Unfortunately, a
much depleted Cwmbran side came up against a very strong
Howardian team in the first match. Howardian scored their first
of nine goals in the second minute and by half time the score
was 6 – 0. Cwmbran continued to compete and were rewarded with a
goal just after half time. The fitness of the Howardian team
paid off with a further three goals before the final whistle.
The second match
saw the defending champions Penarth take on Cwmbran. The skills
of Penarth proved decisive against a tiring Cwmbran team who
conceded a goal in the first minute. Two excellent hat tricks
one from Pip Laugharne and another from Heulwen Simm finally saw
Penarth run out with a 9 – 0 victory.
Penarth played
Howardian in the final and deciding match. Previously in the
South Wales League the teams had drawn, was this to be yet
another draw and would the goal conceded by Howardian in their
match against Cwmbran prove decisive?
Howardian started
strongly and took the game to Penarth scoring their first goal
in the third minute. Howardian continued to press and went two
up in the sixth minute from a well taken penalty corner from
Captain Emma Winch. Penarth became anxious and it didn’t help
when two green cards were awarded against them, followed by a
yellow card for the Penarth captain. During the period of
suspension Howardian tried to make the most of the one man
advantage but the Penarth defence held firm.
Penarth came out
strongly at the start of the second half and scored an excellent
goal in the 30th minute. Howardian immediately retaliated from a
penalty corner bringing the score to 3 – 1, there followed a
period when both teams attempted to gain dominance but finally
Howardian conceded a penalty corner which resulted in a second
goal for Penarth. Penarth now sensed they could win and put the
Howardian defence under a lot of pressure and but for a
brilliant save from the Howardian goalkeeper, Emma Olivari,
could have tied the match. Into the last minute Howardian
conceded a penalty corner, the ball was pushed out to Heulwen
Simm who with the last shot of the match scored the decisive
goal for Penarth with her second hat trick of the day.
Penarth retained
their title and a place in the European Championships 2007 on
goal difference from Howardian. Welsh President, Anne Ellis
presented the trophy to the Penarth captain, Sian Baldwin.
This final match
gave Penarth much needed match practice against worthy opponents
before they fly off to Bratislava later in the month to compete
in the 2006 European Indoor Challenge tournament.
