National League Match Report
Whitchurch Hockey Club v Oxted HC (December 4 2005)
Whitchurch lost the chance to go second in the EHL National
South after losing 3-2 at close rivals Oxted. It was a game the
Welshmen could easily have won but for a poor start when some
clever approach work by the Oxted forwards set up Reece Bassoon
and Justin King to open up a 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes.
Whitchurch responded magnificently, forcing Oxted onto the back
foot, and Laith El Khatib and Jon Collis struck on the half-hour
to leave the match delicately poised at 2-2 at the end of the
first period. In a tight and well-contested second half it was
Oxted who made the vital breakthrough, Lee Dunn scoring the
winning goal in open play with just ten minutes remaining. The
EHL season breaks now until January. Whitchurch lie in 3rd place
behind Oxted, second, and Havant the leaders, a satisfactory
position considering that key players have missed many of the
opening series of matches and six of their remaining nine
matches are at home.
