LEANDRO NEGRE, ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE FIH

INFORMATION BULLETIN

The EHF is delighted to announce that it’s President, Mr. Leandro Negre from Spain has been elected as President of the International Hockey Federation for a four-year term, at the FIH Congress in LA on 29th November 2008.

A man of great integrity and passion for the game of hockey, Leandro has served the EHF for many years having been elected as EHF Vice-President in 1993 and then taking over the mantle as EHF President when his predecessor as President, Alain Danet, retired in 2003.

Leandro was delighted with the result of the election. Having based his positive campaign on discussions he had with each of the different Continental Federations and their associations. His campaign 'The Change Hockey Wants' proved successful.

He commented: "I am privileged and delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Hockey world in the next phase of growth and development. We have to recognise some Associations are very fragile and need to be nurtured to ensure we do not lose Hockey in these countries. The larger and stronger Associations are looking for leadership in relation to a structured calendar for hockey, and innovation in our properties to ensure Hockey continues to be attractive to future generations.

To those Associations that voted for me, I say thank you. To those who did not, I look forward to winning your confidence. I will strive to unite Hockey behind me in order to continue to grow the sport in a positive way and to celebrate the values shared by Hockey people – young and old.

I take the opportunity to thank Els van Breda Vriesman for her dedication and service to our sport over many years and for leaving the legacy of a strong professional team. I look forward to working with them for the good of Hockey and at the same time grow our position as a leading Olympic sport."

The EHF will announce its plans to appoint an interim President in the coming days.
