Whitchurch stun Old Georgians while Cardiff & UWIC pick up a point
Old Georgians 2, Whitchurch 3
Whitchurch, with several regular players missing, pulled off a stunning 3-2 win at second-placed Old Georgians to claim their fourth Slazenger EHL success of the season. Whitchurch conceded an open play goal to Tom Doran after two minutes, but hit back well, Laith El Khatib firing home the equaliser from a penalty corner just two minutes later. Encouraged, Whitchurch settled into the game well and pressed the Old Georgian defence, missing two chances to score before taking the lead in the eleventh minute, Mark Whatling opening the defence with a thirty yard pass to Rhys Thomas in the circle who converted the chance well. The hosts made a few dangerous breaks but Whitchurch skipper and goalkeeper Iwan Williams kept their forwards at bay. Whitchurch extended their lead on the half hour, the midfield combining well to let in Doug Young to make the score 3-1 at half time. Whitchurch conceded their first short corner five minutes into the second period and top scorer Gareth Carr converted to bring Old Georgians back into the game. Whitchurch though were strong in key positions and denied the Old Georgian's attack any space to work with. The final ten minutes were tense but both defences held strong and there was no further score to leave Whitchurch with a fine win. Whitchurch's next match is this coming Sunday at home to Team Bath Buccaneers ( 1.30 start at W.I.S.).
Cardiff & UWIC 1, Guildford 3
Cardiff & UWIC went into their double header weekend against Guildford at home and Bournville away, knowing that they needed points in order to avoid losing touch at the bottom of the league table.
With this in mind Cardiff started strongly against Guilford forcing their more experienced opponents back early on before taking the lead through an Owain Dolan-Gray goal. Cardiff came out into the second knowing that a repeat performance of the first half would seal their first win in 8 games unfortunately this wasn't to be-Cardiff lost their discipline early on in the second half allowing Guilford to pile on the pressure, which they took advantage of equalizing from a penalty corner rebound. Cardiff & UWIC then capitulated into the type of performance which has dogged them all season with sending offs and making basic mistakes before conceding two disputed goals. Another disappointing performance to add to the already long list!!!
Bournville 4, Cardiff & UWIC 4
Sunday saw Cardiff & UWIC travel to 3rd placed Bournville while firmly rooted to the bottom of the table after all the teams around them won the previous day. Cardiff & UWIC knew that a result from this game was desperately needed. The game started briskly with little evidence of tired legs from the previous day, but it wasn't long before Bournville's slick attack broke through to open the scoring. Cardiff soon found themselves on the back foot again with goalkeeper Steven Gardiner pulling off numerous saves to keep Cardiff in sight. Cardiff soon found their feet and a quick counter attack forced a penalty corner which Mark Ramage buried into the corner for 1-1, at this point it should be noted that this was the first time this season Cardiff & UWIC had come back to level after being a goal down. Bournville's attacks were relentless and it wasn't long before they broke through with a two on one this time leaving Gardiner no chance. Half time seeing Cardiff 2-1 down. Two minutes into the 2nd half Bournville took advantage of a Cardiff error to take a two goal lead. This seemed to spur Cardiff on and a brilliant length of the field team goal saw James Astley score their second of the day. The frantic pace of the game and the previous days exertions were beginning to show in Cardiff's legs as Bournvile once again ripped through their defence to restore their 2 goal advantage 4-2. Cardiff's new found belief and discipline was not to be denied as they continued to pressure Bournville with Joe Naughalty scoring from the resulting penalty corner. Bournville continued to pose a threat with a combination of keeper Gardiner and bad finishing keeping Cardiff in with a chance. It wasn't long before Cardiff and UWIC got the reward they were looking for with an outstanding individual goal from Joe Naughalty drawing Cardiff level at 4-4, they had now come back form two goals down. Final score 4-4. This game was a true team effort with the squad now having the belief that if they stick to the game plan and keep their discipline they can get the results they need to turn their season round.
