Welsh Indoor Cup 2005
Continued from 'home' page...
A
somewhat depleted though hard-fought Welsh Indoor Cup took place
at Caerleon on Saturday 17th December. It soon became apparent
that Swansea Bay, despite being well below full strength, were
the team to beat. Although it did take 8 minutes before they put
away their first goal of seven against Cwmbran.
Northop Hall caught Bridgend napping after two minutes but
couldn’t add to that on their way to a similar tally until the
14th minute. In the next game Bridgend startled Swansea by
taking the lead and then holding them to 2-1 at half time.
However some tired Bridgend legs meant that Swansea added six in
the last ten minutes.
Cwmbran scored their first goal of the tournament in the final
minute of their 7-1 defeat at the hands of Northop Hall. In the
following game they went on to take a two-goal lead over
Bridgend. However the blues fought back and had levelled the
scores by half time, running out eventual 7-3 winners.
In
the final game of the day between Northop Hall and Swansea,
evenly matched in terms of points, struggled for 11 minutes to
break down their opponents’ defence. However an opportunist goal
by Graham Charlesworth broke the deadlock and Swansea added to
this with a Richard Jones penalty corner before Tom Simkin
pulled one back for the northerners.
Swansea scored either side of half time to put the game
effectively beyond Northop Hall’s reach although they fought to
the end and a final score of 5-2.
With Swansea Bay already due to represent Wales in the 2006 EHF
Indoor tournament to be held in Gothenburg in February they have
now ensured their representation at the 2007 tournament.
