Welsh U25’s show true grit against the Russians

Senior and Under 21 Wales players came together as formative Celtic Panthers team to produce two solid performances against a well organised Russian side over the weekend. The mix of U21 and Senior internationals played with great enthusiasm and determination against a Russian side in their final stages of preparation for an Olympic qualifier tournament.

The team coached by Phil Gooderham (Wales Senior Women Coaching team) and Jo Nightingale (Wales U21 Women Coaching team) competed well in most aspects of the game and it was only due to lapse of concentration that allowed Russia to score goals late on in each half, leaving the final score at 3-0. The second of the two match series saw the Russians put out a much more assured (and physical) display. Despite this, the home team although not at the same level as Friday night were still very competitive and scored from two well worked penalty corners to keep the score at 2-2 for most of the match. Despite a great squad effort, two late goals from the Russians meant the match finished at 4-2. The Welsh girls were joined by a contingent of players from Scotland on Sunday for final preparation for the GB Super League next week at Cannock.
