2nd Xl Cup, Shield & Plate Finals - April 2008
Competition results in detail are available here
In an entertaining weekend of hockey, dry (if a little cold) weather blessed Sophia Gardens in Cardiff which certainly helped the vociferous crowd.
In the first match of the day, Cardiff Athletic Ladies 2nds were determined to take the match to Swansea 2nds and despite both teams having chances, halftime came with no score. However in a 2 minute period firstly Athletic (Rhian Williams) took the lead from a penalty corner with Swansea (Emma James) equalising shortly after through their own corner. Again chances came and went and it wasn’t until golden goal extra time that Kira Davies won the game for Swansea with a well taken goal.
The second match between Whitchurch 2nds and Swansea Bay 2nds proved to be not quite so close with Whitchurch maintaining their firm grip on the trophy. However with Swansea Bay going in at half time only 1 goal behind (Rhys Thomas) they must have thought that the chances would come their way to snatch a win. 2 goals in a minute from Thomas (his second) and Graham Charlesworth put paid to any such thoughts with Andrew Cavendish and another from Charlesworth wrapping up a 5-0 victory to the Cardiff based club.
The first of the Shield finals was another to go to golden goal extra time with a fine individual effort from ex-international Izzy Thomissen of Newport Ladies cancelling out Wrexham’s opener with both goals coming late in the match. Thomissen then went one step further in converting a penalty corner with just 4 minutes of extra time left to win the match for the local side.
The Men’s Shield also proved to be entertaining and although Swansea University’s one goal through Matt Kirk just after the break proved to be decisive, Bridgend will no doubt be cursing the number of chances that they just failed to convert. It was a hard fought but fair match with the edge just being taken off the overall game with 2 yellow and a red card being issued in the dying minutes.
The final match saw Wrexham Ladies in their second final of the weekend, this time against fellow North Wales team Dysynni. A penalty corner through Lianne Roberts seemed to settle any early Wrexham nerves and when Emma Speake doubled their advantage just before the break one could have thought that Dysynni would struggle to get anything from the match. However Bethan Williams thought otherwise and her conversion of a penalty corner brought them right back into the game. They had chances to score the equalising goal but it was Wrexham who were to score next (Speake’s second) and a last minute goal from Helen Roberts sealed a 4-1 victory.
All eyes now turn to the Vets finals at Wrexham on 19th & 20th April and the major Welsh Cup semis and finals weekend at Cardiff on 17th and 18th May.
