Swansea Ladies take leader's home record
25th March 2008
Outstanding Win for Swansea Ladies Opens Up Title Chase
Swansea Ladies reduced the gap between runaway leaders Staines and themselves in the English Hockey League with an outstanding win at Staines on the weekend and made a firm statement about their own title ambitions in becoming the only side to succeed at Staines this season. Despite going 2-0 behind to a controversial penalty flick and a well taken breakaway goal, Swansea rallied and the team spirit which is now a Swansea hallmark came to the fore. With captain Sian Fowler cajoling and encouraging, they pulled one goal back through Nia Fowler who beat two players before pushing the ball beyond the Staines keeper. Then, on the stroke of half time, Robyn Wilford scored a second Swansea goal from a penalty corner.
The second half of this top of the table clash was very strongly contested but the Swansea defence, with Emily Scudamore, Angharad Griffiths and keeper Liann Trew prominent, stood firm. As the game went on the Swansea midfield dominance began to tell and Welsh international striker Nia Fowler was able to capitalise on the possession by firing in two more goals in the last ten minutes of play, completing a well deserved hat trick. This pulsating match ended with Swansea the victors by 4 goals to 2 and the Staines players distraught at losing their ground record to the Welsh team.
