Whitchurch win to move 4 points clear of the ‘danger’ zone

Whitchurch gained a welcome 4-2 win in their vital Slazenger EHL match at Bromley & Beckenham

Both sides, level on points going into the game, were desperate for a win to move away from the relegation zone, and it was Bromley who struck first, Graham Butler firing home a penalty corner in the 9th minute.  Whitchurch, in determined mood, took just two minutes to draw level, striker Doug Young converting from a penalty corner rebound, and ten minutes later Laith El Khatib scored from close range after a well worked move to give Whitchurch a deserved 2-1 half time lead.  Bromley equalised just two minutes into the second period through Nick Bluett but Whitchurch kept pressing the home defence and were rewarded when Jon Collis fired home a penalty corner with twenty minutes remaining and Joe Naughalty finished off a swift move out of defence three minutes later to give Whitchurch a well deserved victory.  Whitchurch remain in eighth place in the table but they move three points clear of Bromley with a much better goal difference.  They now enter a run of three successive home fixtures, commencing with Ipswich this coming Sunday (12.00 start at WIS, Sophia Gardens).
