Whitchurch finish the season in style

Whitchurch ended their Slazenger EHL programme in style on 6th April with a well-deserved 2-1 win against newly crowned National South division champions Exeter University
.  It was an impressive team performance by Whitchurch against a side which had lost only twice in the league all season.  Whitchurch opened the game confidently, controlling possession and searching for openings in the well-organised Exeter defence with good movement off the ball.  It was the University who struck first, though, against the run of play, Ed Kelleher firing home from close range after 13 minutes.  Despite the setback Whitchurch continued to dominate play, with Jonny Gordon having a fine game in defence, Tom Fisher and Mark Whatling creating openings from midfield and Jamie Westerman and Joe Naughalty working tirelessly in attack.  Westerman had a shot cleared off the line and the Exeter defence was stretched on numerous other occasions but the half ended with the visitors one up.  Whitchurch started the second period strongly and were rewarded with the equaliser ten minutes into the half, Owen Brotherton firing home following a penalty corner.  Exeter were roused into action and created two penalty corners in quick succession, both well dealt with by Whitchurch skipper Iwan Williams in goal. Whitchurch redoubled their efforts and took a well-deserved lead with fifteen minutes remaining from another penalty corner.  Joe Naughalty’s flick hit the post but Owen Brotherton followed up well to drive a fine angled shot past the Exeter goalkeeper for his second goal of the match.  Whitchurch created further goal scoring chances and finished the match strongly to record a fine win.  Whitchurch move up to fifth place in the table but will finish sixth if Indian Gymkhana win their outstanding postponed game.
