Whitchurch make it 4 wins in a row

Whitchurch gained a 2-1 win against visitors Indian Gymkhana on March 16 to make it four wins in a row in the Slazenger EHL South.  The Welshmen started the game well, dominating possession with good player movement and the Indian Gymkhana defence had to work hard to deny the Whitchurch attackers.  Whitchurch had chances to score but it was the visitors who struck first, taking the lead through an open play goal by Jashpal Jutla after 32 minutes.  Whitchurch, though, equalised from the restart, Doug Young firing home after a good incisive build up on the left flank to leave the game evenly poised at 1-1 at the interval.  The second period followed a similar pattern, with Whitchurch dominating possession but unable to pierce the Gymkhana defence, whilst the visitors looked dangerous on the break.  Whitchurch made the vital breakthrough ten minutes from time, Joe Naughalty making a strong run on the left to set up a chance that Laith El Khatib coolly converted for a 2-1 lead.  Gymkhana worked hard to get the equaliser but the Whitchurch defence stood firm, with Rhys Gowman making a good debut and skipper Iwan Williams pulling off some fine saves in goal.  The win leaves Whitchurch in sixth place in the table, but they are now just two points behind Indian Gymkhana who are fifth.  Whitchurch are at Oxted in their next match on Saturday 29th March and then entertain leaders Exeter University in their final league fixture on Sunday 6th April.
