Whitchurch hit Ipswich for six

Whitchurch made it four wins from their last six matches in the Slazenger EHL with an impressive 6-1 success against visitors Ipswich.  It was a sparkling all-round performance by the Whitchurch team who took the initiative from the first whistle, pressurising the Ipswich defence with quick passing movements and sharpness in the circle.  Alex Keating opened the scoring after six minutes following good work by Laith El Khatib down the right and Mark Whatling increased the lead ten minutes later following a strong run from midfield by Jamie Westerman.  Eight minutes before the break Jon Collis and Ben Croxall combined well to set up a chance for Alex Keating to score his second and give Whitchurch a well-deserved 3-0 lead at the interval.  Ipswich worked hard to get back into the game but the Whitchurch defence was strong and keeper Iwan Williams saved well from the few penalty corners that the visitors gained.  Whitchurch continued to create openings in the Ipswich defence, and Doug Young and Joe Naughalty converted chances well to open up a 5-0 lead midway through the second half.  Richard Stainthorpe grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors shortly afterwards before Mark Whatling scored his second goal of the game and Whitchurch’s sixth in the last few minutes.  The win moves Whitchurch up to 7th place in the table and with three of their last four matches at home they will be looking for a top six finish.  They entertain Cambridge University this coming Sunday (1.30 start at WIS, Sophia Gardens).
