Whitchurch end their losing run with a 6-3 victory
After the disappointment of a 2-1 home defeat against Holcombe the previous day Whitchurch bounced back to form with a fine 6-3 success against Robinsons at Bristol. With both sides keen for a win to move away from the lower reaches of the table the game started at a high tempo and it was Whitchurch who made the early running, moving into a two goal lead after twenty minutes with a well-worked penalty corner from Alex Keating and an open-play goal from Laith El Khatib. Robinsons pulled a goal back five minutes later from a penalty stroke but Whitchurch kept up the pressure on the Robinsons defence and Mark Whatling restored their two-goal advantage before half-time after good work by Joe Naughalty down the left. Whitchurch started the second half positively with good flowing hockey but Robinsons were dangerous on the break and the Bristol club converted two penalty corner chances to bring the scores level at 3-3 with twenty minutes remaining. Whitchurch responded in style, pressing the Robinson’s defence, and took control of the game with three goals in nine minutes with Laith El Khatib and Mark Whatling each scoring their second goals of the game and Jamie Westerman converting a penalty stroke. The win takes Whitchurch above Robinsons into ninth place in the table. Against Holcombe on Saturday an opportunist goal from Joe Naughalty early in the second half had given Whitchurch a deserved lead but Holcombe, riding high in the table, hit back strongly, leading goalscorer David Mathews equalising five minutes later and striking the winner with ten minutes remaining.
Whitchurch are away to Ipswich this Sunday (25th November) in the last of the Slazenger EHL fixtures before the mid-season break.
