Welsh Cup Finals – the Major Cups of the weekend!
The final of this season’s Welsh Cups are being played in a different format with both Men’s and Women’s semi-finals on Saturday 17th May and the two finals the following day with all matches being played at WIS, Cardiff. In the first of the women’s semi’s at 9:45, Cardiff based Howardian’s take on perennial winners Swansea and will be determined to reverse the narrow 1-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of the same club in last year’s semi-final. Swansea will have just returned from their EuroHockey club tournament so will their efforts abroad take it out of them enough to give the ‘Pinks’ a chance?
The second semi final (12:00) pits Welshpool against UWIC. With UWIC having been in the final three times since 2000 will their experience enable them to overcome the mid-Wales side or will Welshpool, conquerors of Cup holders Penarth in the last round hold firm and make the final for the first time?
The first Men’s semi final takes place at 14:15 with Cardiff University taking on Swansea Bay. Although the ‘Bay’ beat the University twice in the league this season, it was they who fell out of the bottom of the league and so may have a point to prove. However with the University having won the Cup in 2005/6 they will be eager to repeat their success.
The final match of the day sees holders Cardiff & UWIC face their old rivals Whitchurch. Fresh from their successful tournament campaign in joining Whitchurch in the English National League, Cardiff will be determined to continue their recent stranglehold over their opponents. Whitchurch however may wish to prove a point to the League newcomers.
The finals will start the following day at 11:00 (Women) and 13:30 (Men) and should prove a fitting climax to the respective Welsh Cup competitions this season.
This year’s Cup Final weekend sees a couple of new features which will hopefully enhance your hockey experience! Visit the food tent which will sell hot and cold beverages, bacon and sausage rolls, baguettes and ice creams all day! If you have any budding young hockey players then bring them along with you and visit the Hockey Fun Factory, supported by Sport Cardiff which is situated on the tennis courts next to the pitch.
