SE Wales U-16 Girls take on Surrey

4th March 2008
On the National Day of Wales, the U16 South Wales East Girls' Hockey team travelled to 'The City of London Freeman's School' to play Surrey who are the present South of England and County Champions. After a marvellous match with both teams defending national pride, the U16 South Wales team won 2-1.

The first half was full of incident with the U16 England goalkeeper making some outstanding saves. However, as the first half progressed the South Wales team scored two goals, following excellent work from Centre Half Phoebe Richards and Captain Rhiannon Lavin. Firstly, Katie Howson hit the back of the net with a reverse sweep shot and then ten minutes later Emma Hammond, who plays for Cwmcarn School, hit the ball from just inside the circle to score a second goal. Minutes before half time good work from the Surrey forwards brought them a deserved goal.

The second half was played at a considerable pace and while Surrey had a few more chances to score another goal. The South Wales defence stood strong with Alisha Davies, Hannah Morgan and Emma Renshaw playing in outstanding form in order to keep the score at 2-1.

Coach Geoff Roderick said of his team's performance "It was a magnificent victory with every player making a significant contribution to the victory." Sue Legge, the team Manager could not hide her delight at this success. Many of the players, who will be eligible to play next year in the same age group will now complete this season with their clubs before embarking on a new campaign in 2009.
