RAF CAREERS - 2006 WELSH BOYS SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
2006 REPORT
The 2006 finals were as good a day as we have had enjoyed in the era of
RAF sponsorship with glorious fine weather, competitive and closely
contested matches and a surfeit of umpires! Tribute was paid to Glyn
Davies who had instigated the competition in the mid 1970s and who had
organised the North Wales qualifying stages until his death last year.
The Under 12s was a nail-biting affair that was won by
Fitzalan School from Cardiff who narrowly beat Connah’s Quay (2-1) from
North Wales, Ysgol Tywyn from West Wales (2-0) and then their Cardiff
rivals, Ysgol Glan Taf (2-1) with Glan Taf missing the chance to
equalise from the penalty spot with just seconds to go! However, Glan
Taf deservedly picked up the runners-up spot with Ysgol Tywyn acquitting
themselves well on their first appearance at Finals Day. Dale Hutchinson
from Fitzalan was the player of the day and had a large influence on his
team’s eventual victory.
The Under 14 competition again saw the South Wales teams from
Ysgol Glan Taf, Cardiff and Brynteg, Bridgend, overcome their north
Walian opponents from Eirias School, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl. However, there
were some talented hockey players on view, notably Michael Pennington
from Rhyl who ensured that his team defeated Eirias for 3rd place. Sam
Bailey from Brynteg had just returned from Belgium and France where he
had played with distinction in Wales’ Under 16 team and he had a
tremendous influence in securing the runners-up spot for his team,
Brynteg. However, pride of place went to Ysgol Glan Taf who’s firepower
was just too much for their opponents – Rhys Gowman, Tom Harries and
Oliver Rendle had outstanding cup final matches and their team
deservedly won the trophy.
In the Under 16 competition, Whitchurch were run extremely
close by Ysgol Creuddyn from Colwyn Bay. Although Whitchurch went into
the lead, Creuddyn’s captain, Jack Dennis, netted a superb short corner
strike to level the scores by half-time. Whitchurch then retook the lead
and held this precariously at times, until two late goa in the last 2
minutes brought them a 4-1 victory.
Whitchurch also lifted the Under 18 trophy by defeating Eirias
School from Colwyn Bay by 4 goals to 0 although Emlyn Jones and Joshua
Williams had notable games for Eirias and did much to make this a good
contest. However, the trophy was lifted by Welsh international, Chris
Fido who paid tribute to his team’s overall performance.
At one point during the day, there was a low fly-past by some fighter
jets, presumably the RAF just popping over to see how their event was
going!
