CUP FINAL SPECIAL, Day 2
Sunday 30th April

Men's Welsh Veterans
Cup
Whitchurch: 1; Swansea Bay: 2
In the first match on the second day of the
finals weekend, the holders for the past three
seasons, Swansea Bay faced an experienced
Whitchurch team containing a number of
ex-internationals. Through the efforts of Mark
Lewis (ex-GB) and Nazir Mohammed, Whitchurch
seemed to settle more quickly than their
opponents and took the lead through Bob Fleck
which they were determined to hold onto. However
Swansea were not going to release their hold on
the trophy too easily and two penalty corners
from Giovanni Rabiotti and Ian Davies in the
second half ensured the trophy went home to
Swansea.

Penarth: 2; Swansea: 3 (after
extra time)
In the Women’s Cup, Swansea were pitted against
their old rivals Penarth and when both Carys
Hopkins and Gemma Petty converted penalty
corners to put the holders 2-0 up after 29
minutes, the writing seemed to be on the wall
for Penarth. Ex-international Kate Morgan cut
the deficit converting another penalty corner
and despite determined defence, Swansea could
not stop Caryl James forcing the equaliser with
7 minutes left. Both sides came very close to
scoring what would have been the winning goal
but extra time was required to break the
deadlock. Sarah Sloane was the Swansea hero,
converting a penalty stroke in the 78th minute
to ensure Swansea’s stranglehold on the cup was
maintained.

Cardiff University: 2; Wrexham: 1 (after
extra time)
In the final match of the weekend, Cardiff
University were matched against Wrexham. Cardiff
fielded a stronger team than the previous day’s
Shield winning side but Wrexham were the team
that found their early form with Rob Richards
scoring from a well worked penalty corner. This
seemed to spur the students into action and Paul
Hayes pulled the scores level from an open play
goal after 17 minutes. The game increased in
tempo as time went on and with European
qualification at stake neither side was prepared
to give up without making a fight of it. With
‘goals’ being disallowed at both ends extra time
again came into use for the fourth successive
game of the weekend. To cap off an excellent
weekend for the University it was their Captain,
Duncan Courtney who converted a penalty corner
during the first extra period to win the game
3-2 and break the Wrexham hearts.

With six games being so closely contested it was
a tribute to all 12 teams that the weekend again
proved to be the highlight of the domestic
season. Thanks go to Alison Cook (Chair of WHU
Competitions), all the umpires and technical
officials and particularly all the volunteers
who gave of their time so willingly to ensure
the event ran smoothly.
